Your Hair is More Than a Number!

Posted by Ellana Stinson on

We have all been herded into a category of some sort.  Whether is skin tone, body shape, gender, or profession…we fit in so many categories.  With its many moods and behavior, I guess our hair deserves a category as well.  Are you straight, wavy, curly or coily?  But not only does the pattern matter, but the porosity and condition of your scalp matters as well.  And to what degree…it can get complicated.

Structure, Texture, Porosity, Scalp condition

It can get real sticky icky icky, but don’t worry, there are a plethora of charts, videos, and blogs to help you get into the weeds to determine what hair tribe you belong to.  But why is this important?

These categories are to help you determine which product are good for your hair and what type of ingredients would generally do the trick and produce all kinds of hair magic.  Maybe you have heard of the sink or float hair strand in water trick to determine your porosity.  Well I hate to break it to you, but that is not an accurate test….Sorry.

Have you realized that your category designation often leaves you feeling like maybe you missed the mark and your hair MUST be in a different category.

Our hair is complex, many of us have several different hair types. For me, the hair on the front of my head is very different than the hair on the back of my head.  The curl pattern is different and is much finer.  So this poses a challenge with natural styling, but I have managed.  So it is hard to just throw your hair in one box especially if you have more than 1 hair type. It is important to get to know your hair, its “temperament.”
