5 ways to soothe an itchy scalp

Posted by Dr. Ellana on

Itching, scratching, and flaking can be such a pitfall for a cute hair style. Not to mention, an itchy scalp can drive you absolutely crazy. But what causes this irritating itch to even happen? And how do you know which methods to use to resolve it? In this blog, we’ll be covering the do’s and don’ts of an itchy scalp to get you the relief that you need.

What Causes Itchy Scalp

If we want to find a cure, the best course of action is to figure out the cause. Fortunately, there are a few basic reasons that can cause an itchy scalp that are easy to narrow down.

  1. You’re dehydrated – The body communicates with us in a lot of ways. When you’re hungry, your stomach growls. When you’re sleepy, your eyes get tired. When your skin is dehydrated it itches. Dehydration can be caused by not drinking enough water, using some oils as a moisturizer or dirty hair.
  2. You’re allergic to a certain product – Sometimes your hair is properly moisturized and protected, but if you’re using products that are causing inflammation to your scalp, that can cause you to itch and scratch.
  3. Too much product – We all know the old saying, “too much of a good thing.” Well, that applies to your product usage too. If you’re using a lot of product and not washing it out properly, you can clog your pores and that will cause your scalp to suffer.
  4. Dandruff – For those of you that don’t know, dandruff is when dry skin starts to flake off your scalp. Fortunately, there are some great remedies and products for dandruff.

Keep in mind, if you have secondary symptoms like redness, swelling, or any other abnormal symptoms, you should talk to your doctor (primary care physician or a dermatologist) about it to get more serious help. But feel free to try these remedies to see if it eases your pain.

Top 5 Remedies for Itchy Scalp
  1. Give yourself the best wash day possible – Since dehydration is a major cause of an itchy scalp, getting moisture into your hair needs to be the first goal. So how do you do that?
    • Consider a short pre-poo in your hair
    • Detangle your hair before you wash
    • Use a microfiber towel
    • Consider investing in a leave-in conditioner (coming soon)
    • Use a shampoo and conditioner that will promote moisture (coming soon)
  1. Find, or DIY, hair care products with soothing oils – Before you go shopping, try looking for products that clearly say that they “promote hydration”, “quench hair”, or encourage moisture. But don’t just judge a book by it’s cover, take a look at the ingredients list. Look for natural and healthy ingredients that encourage hydration, especially water (that should always be the first ingredient). Here are a few great oils to consider looking for:

·      Argan oil

·      Peppermint oil

·      Jojoba oil

·      Coconut oil

·      Tea tree oil

·      Rosemary oil

·      Avocado oil

·      Vitamin E

  1.  Get rid of products that you might be allergic to – One of the things that most naturals forget is that you can be allergic to certain products. If your hair doesn’t necessarily feel dehydrated but it is itchy, you might need to check to see if you’re having an allergic reaction to your products. Try removing certain products from your hair care routine and see if you feel better.
  2. See if you’re using too much oil – There is such a thing as too much oil and that could be clogging your pores. Try using less or completely removing oil from your hair care routine for 60 days and see if your moisture retention improves.
  3. Don’t wear styles that are too tight – Your hair could just be in styles that are much too tight. High ponytails, tight braids, and hair glues can cause your skin to breakout and become itchy. Wearing tight styles for too long can lead to more serious conditions like permanent hair loss as well. Make sure that your protective styles aren’t too tight, and occasionally wear more open hairstyles too.
