Natural Does not Equate to Healthy

Posted by Ellana Stinson on

Just because you decided to go natural doesn’t mean your hair is automatically healthy. You have to stay on top of your hair care routine. In general, being natural means you don't use any chemicals to alter the texture or natural curl pattern of your hair. That means no relaxers, no perms to curl naturally straight hair, and no texturizers to loosen tight curls. Some say that hair dye also contains chemicals and choose not to dye their hair.

As Allure highlighted, the four main categories are straight, wavy, curly, and kinky hair patterns. These four common textures not only look different, but also in the ways in which they should be cared for. Knowing the texture of your hair is important because it dictates how often you should clean your hair, what products to use, and what styles will work best for you.

While going natural you may experience shrinkage, which isn’t a bad thing, and in fact can be a sign of good hair health. As long as you take good care of your natural hair, growth is a given.

Some may feel that because natural hair is thick and coarse, that it is stronger or tougher to break but actually, it is the opposite. Natural hair in nature is quite fragile because of its wiry-shaped strands. The bends in the shaft make it more difficult for natural oil to reach the ends, making natural hair more prone to dryness and breakage.

To avoid breakage and nurture healthy hair, it is critical to handle your hair with care. One of the most common ways that people damage their natural hair is with harsh styling choices. Tight hairdos can lead to permanent hair loss, especially around the edges and crown. Constant use of heat, especially without proper heat protectant, can lead to breakage and heat damage.

Whether you are doing your own hair or a stylist, make sure that it is being treated with care. Also, choose protective styles such as braids or twists sometimes to give your hair and hands a break.

CBD oil improves scalp health and prevents/reverses damage. It also increases cerebral blood flow: boosting circulation and delivering the oil’s vital nutrients to the scalp. These proven hair growth nutrients include Omega-3, Omega-6 and Omega-9 – which “accelerate the transition to the anagen phase” of the hair-growth cycle. Ensure you avoid dry and brittle hair by keeping your hair moisturized with Safo Hair moisturizer.

In addition to CBD oil and our products, vitamins are also essential to ensuring hair and scalp health. Vitamin A is an amazing vitamin which has been linked to good hair health.  My favorite, SWEET POTATOES are chocked full of vitamin A which research has shown to promote the production of debut which helps keep the hair healthy.  Vitamin A can also speed up the rate of hair growth and encourage the growth of thicker hair and prevent hair follicles from regressing.

Check out my favorite sweet potato recipe:

▢ 1.2 - 1.4 lb sweet potato , peeled (2 medium)

▢ 1 1/2 tbsp olive oil

▢ arugula (~3 handfuls)

▢ 1/2 cup (5 oz) pecans

▢ 1 tsp oil

▢ 2 oz Goats Cheese or Danish feta (or your choice of cheese recommend a soft or creamy cheese)

HONEY LEMON DRESSING (Finger licking good!)

▢ 1 tbsp honey

▢ 2 tbsp lemon juice , fresh

▢ 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

▢ 1/2 tsp Dijon mustard

▢ Salt and pepper , to taste

Preheat oven to 430F.

Cut sweet potato into 3/5" thick slices. Cut the larger rounds in half (into semi circles).

Place in a bowl, drizzle over oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper. Toss well to coat. Pour onto baking tray.

Roast for 20 minutes, turn slices and roast for another 10 minutes or until golden.

Place Dressing ingredients in a jar, mix with a teaspoon (to get honey off the base) then shake well until combined.

Toast pecans in a dry skillet over medium high heat for 3 minutes, or until they smell nutty.

Remove pecans, then heat 1 tsp oil.

Place everything in a bowl, reserving some pecans and cheese for garnish. Drizzle with most of the dressing, then toss gently.

Transfer into a serving bowl, garnish with remaining pecans and cheese. Drizzle with remaining dressing. Serve!
